Music recommendation – May

Peter Doherty – Grace / Wastelands

I should have recommended it earlier. This album is still on my playlist starting from its release date (March), and it is one of my favourite albums of this year. OK, I should make a claim that I am a fan of Peter, The Libertines, Babyshambles and so, to avoid conflict of interest (but i receive no interest anyway). So if you are a fan, you probably know most of the songs from various sessions, demo, bootlegs – so i don’t really need to say more. This is a Peter’s solo album, and a long awaited one (it keeps delay from year and year), you don’t hear something like Babyshambles or The Libertines, at least this is more alike of what he has been doing on his own (if you know). But at the same time, it involves various kind of style, some is jazzy, some is old fashioned, some is just acoustic . Listening to Grace/Wastelands is like watching a film, so set back and listen, imagine and immerse in the dark.

Music recommendation – Dec

Deerhunter – Microcastle / Weird Era Cont.

I’ve been actually listening to this album for nearly a month. I can only say it is stunning, I’ve been told that they are a cool band but got no chance to listening to them until now. it is a 2 discs album, Microcastle sounds like a proper one while Weird Era Cont. is more experimental. it is hard to define them, they play different sort of sounds/music including dream-pop, ambience, indie-pop, post-punk, etc, and i don’t really think it’s important to put them into all these genres, instead, what their music brings the listeners is the key things. I think I am going to continue listening to the album throughout Dec, need not to say, this is one of my favourite records this year, I am so happy to have some good music at least at the near end of the year.

Human Highway – Moody Motorcycle

Human Highway is formed of Nick Thorburn (or previously known as Nick Diamonds in his Unicorns era) & Jim Guthrie.  They have been friends since Islands’ debut album Return to the Sea, Jim played on a couple of tracks in the album, so such collaboration seems to make sense, especially when Nick often involves into different side projects as his music creation outlet. This album starts with a happy sense of vacation and summertime to the autumn sadness and melancholy. “I think it’s an overwhelmingly sad record.” Nick said it clearly enough, though he couldn’t be trusted very often for what he said in interviews, but this time, I think he did it in a fair way, “It’s a great record to smoke opium to”, this definitely applies to the track All Day. But just like Nick, I’ve always been drawn to sad songs too, so I recommend you What World and Duties of a Lighthouse Keeper. Anyhow, this record is probably my favourite of this year so far. And it will go to my “on the road collection”, although it is not those bright positive getting on the road record, it has another sense but maybe closer to our feelings.

that night on telly I saw the people who fight for their freedom, who fight for what they think right, I was so touched. why are we be repressed? why we have to accept something that is not wanted? why is this city so terrible and cruel? she is killing every kind of tiny things that is with unique characteristics, because everyone has to be the same after all. so we’re losing our faith, energy, and at the end, our passion. we want nothing but a quiet life, we don’t want to say anything anymore. because no one is gonna understand us. we become all kind of cheap labour, we are mean, because we are suffering.

  

but when I saw the people shouting loudly for what they believe, I know that is something I used to have in my heart, it’s long lost. the dialogue from breathless, they keep coming to me, I don’t know if I’m unhappy because I’m not free, or if I’m not free because I’m unhappy.
 

the one who fight for his right shouted: I’m going to jump to the sea, anyone follows? a lot of people replied firmly: YES. in my heart, I have my answer too, I jump when you say jump man. this is the protest for their freedom, even they might not win the war, they have the glory of defending their own right. and I know, we’re all going to fight till the end. they robbed your life from you, tell them you want to get it back, why you wanna spend your life in jail?
